LinkRunner AT: Troubleshooting: USB Connect/Disconnect Issues

When you try to connect your LinkRunner AT (LRAT) to your computer you might see symptoms where it connects and disconnects repeatedly. You are then unable to use the LRAT Manager software because it will not stay connected long enough to do anything.

Why is this happening?
In most cases, when an application or service is trying to write to an external device it doesn't cause issues. With the LinkRunner AT, it shows up as a drive in Windows, however, it is a non-writable device and this can cause communication issues between the LRAT and the service trying to write to it. USB Storage Devices or other devices that are writable would not have this problem.


Troubleshooting
In order to identify what is causing the LRAT to switch between connect/disconnect there are a few things you can try.

1.  Another USB Port
One of the simplest steps is to try another USB port on the computer. Perhaps you are connecting into a USB 3.0 port, try a 2.0 port.

2.  Another Computer
Does your computer have a company image? Try the LRAT on another computer, maybe a home computer?

3. Common Applications
There are some common applications that could be causing the issue, check to see if you have any of these and temporarily disable them:
 

  • Anti-Virus Software
  • Acronis True Image or Managed Machine Services
  • Dell Data Protection Services


3. MSConfig
If you've already tried the steps above and it's still not working then we'll need to identify the service that is causing the conflict. In order to do this, you'll need to use MSConfig to temporarily disable services and then add them back slowly to find the culprit.
 

  1.  Click Start 
  2.  Click inside the box for “Search programs and files"
  3.  Type msconfig
  4.  Double click to open msconfig.exe
  5.  Select Diagnostic Startup and click ok
  6.  Reboot your computer
  7. Reconnect the LRAT, does it work now?


Yes, LRAT Connects Properly

 

  1. Launch MSConfig again and this time go to the services and startup tabs. Begin adding back, either in groups or one by one, to determine which one is causing the conflict.
  2. Once you find the culprit, you can temporarily disable it by leaving it as is, or permanently disable it by uninstalling the application or disabling the service.
